What is Quick Disconnect function?

Call Center headsets made with two separated parts, the headpiece and the bottom cord connects the headset to a telephone or a computer. So headset user may hold the two sides of the connector pull straightly to disconnect them quick and easily.

Quick Disconnect function give you Convenience while using the headset

With the Quick Disconnect function, headset user may quickly separate the headset from the bottom cord and step away. When the headset disconnected from the bottom cord, there will be no audio on the headset. However, the phone call will not be disconnected. Since there is not audio on the headset, the other side of phone line will not hear anything, just like the headset user pressed the mute button. It just like pressed the mute button, the other side of the call will not hear anything. User may come back and plug it back and continue the phone conversation. With the Quick Disconnect function, headset user doesn’t need to reach out to the back of the phone to disconnect the headset.

Quick Disconnect function makes your headset more useful

Because the bottom cord can be separated from the headset, user may replace a different bottom cord to use the same headset with different devices. For instance, you have different Cisco phone models in the office. One is CP-8851, one is SPA525G. The CP-8851 has a RJ9 headset jack and the SPA525G has a 2.5mm headset jack. You may use the same headset connect to a RJ9 Quick Disconnect cord model QD-CUF with the CP-8851; and a 2.5mm Quick Disconnect cord model QD-SPA with the SPA525G. You may also connect the headset with an USB Quick Disconnect cord, model QDUSB to use the headset with your computer.

Headset jack and USB ports are soldered at your phone and computer’s mainboard. Plug and unplug that way too often may damage the soldering ports that connect the jack or port with the mainboard. In the other hand, OvisLink made Quick Disconnect cords are supper durable. Plug and unplug the connector will not damage the connector, even hundreds of thousands of times. You just need to hold the two sides of the connector, pull and plug straightly. And this is why Quick Disconnect function makes your phone or computer more durable.

Since Quick Disconnect function gives user convenience, more usage for the headset and let the phone last longer, professional Call Centers normally choose headsets with Quick Disconnect functions. OvisLink not only makes all the headset models with Quick Disconnect function, but also provide many different connector options to let our customers utilize the headset better. So, problem solved? No, many customers still have problem even have the right headset model on hand. Some customers complain that the headset they receive are defective or do not work with their phone. Why? Because some Mitel phones need to program a headset key in order to use a headset with it; some Mitel phones need to activate the headset function; and some Mitel phones need to set audio path for headset.

2.5mm Headset Common Issues and Fixes

In this post, we talk about 2.5mm headset common issues and fixes. Using a 2.5mm headset, people may experience problem like, no sound out from the headset, static or voice not stable. Some customers thinking the headset is defected; the headset’s quality is bad. Is it true? Let us list the most common issues, find out the reason and fix them.

Issues: No dial tone / Noise / Cut in & out

Connected the headset’s 2.5mm connector to the phone, press the headset key, but can’t get dial tone on the headset speaker. The headset works, but there are noise, sometimes the headset voice cut in and out.

To find out what cost these problems, let’s see how does 2.5mm headset connector work.

How 2.5mm headset connector works?

2.5mm headset connector is a round pin connector in 2.5mm diameter, 14mm long and with 3 conductors separated by 2 black insulators. These 3 conductors connect to the headset’s speaker and microphone as the image below.

2.5mm headset connector
2.5mm Headset Connector

In the other side, the telephone 2.5mm headset jack has 3 corresponding conductors as the following image.

What happen if these corresponding conductors not touch?

2.5mm Headset Common Issue 1

The tip of the 2.5mm connector may not be able to touch the microphone+ conductor of the headset jack.

2.5mm headset common issue 1, Connector doesn't touch wiht the microphone conductor pin in the 2.5mm headset jack diagram
2.5mm Connector doesn’t touch wiht the microphone conductor pin in the 2.5mm headset jack

2.5mm Headset Common Issue 2

Or, the headset jack’s speaker+ pint may not touch the 2.5mm connector’s speaker + conductor.

2.5mm headset common issue 2, connector speaker+ conductor doesn't touch 2.5mm headset jack's speaker pin diagram
2.5mm headset connector speaker+ conductor doesn’t touch 2.5mm headset jack’s speaker pin

The length of a 2.5mm headset connector is only 14mm. It is not easy to tell by looking at the connector if the connector is all the way in or only 13mm or 13.5mm into the jack, especially if the jack is deep like the left phone on the image below.

Desktop phone's 2.5mm headset jack
The 2.5mm headset jack on the left phone is deep inside

How to fix these issues?

It is simple; make sure the 2.5mm headset connector is all the way into the headset jack as image below.

2.5mm headset connector plugged into headset jack correctly diagram
2.5mm headset connector plugged into headset jack correctly

The microphone and speaker conductors inside the 2.5mm headset jack are little springs. When the speaker passed the 2.5mm connector tip, there will be a little click sound. When the microphone conductor passed the connector tip, there will be another click sound. Make sure hear two clicks sound. Some phone’s 2.5mm jack may be tighter at new. In this case, we need to push the 2.5mm connector harder until hear two clicks sound.

With the 2.5mm headset connector fully plugged into the 2.5mm headset jack, problem like no sound, static and voice cut in and out will be gone.

Another Issue: 2.5mm connector does not stay in the headset jack

Reason 1: the connector is not into the headset jack enough

The microphone and speaker conductors inside the 2.5mm headset jack are little springs. These two springs are in opposite direction. Together these two springs hold the 2.5mm connector tide inside the headset jack once the 2.5mm connector fully plugged into the headset jack.

Reason 2: The jack is not a 2.5mm jack.

In North America, home phones and home office phones use 2.5mm headset jack. Other countries, like in Asia, they may use 3.5mm. In some case, people try to use a 2.5mm headset with a smartphone. But smartphones use 3.5mm jack, not 2.5mm. With 1mm space, 2.5mm connector will not stay in a 3.5mm jack.

Using 2.5mm headset with Computer?

There are many different configurations on computer audio jacks. Some computers use 3.5mm jack. Some use 2.5mm jack but separated speaker jack and microphone jack. For computer, we suggest customers use USB headset instead. Please read our post “How to use your telephone headset with a computer“.

There are some desktop phone brands and models use 2.5mm headset. Like Allworx 9100 IP Phone series, Cisco SPA Small Business series phones, Polycom SoundPoint IP phones older models, AT&T, Panasonic Home Office phones.

We talk about 2.5mm headset some common issues and fixes on this post. If you experienced different type of issues when using 2.5mm headset, please share with us. We’ll do our best to solve the issue for you.

Some customers found they can’t connect their telephone headset with their computer’s audio jack. The connectors are different. They contact us to find out if we have adapter that connects a telephone headset to a computer’s audio port.

The answer is no. There is no universal adapter can connect telephone headsets to different computers.

Why?

Telephone headsets normally have a RJ9 (4P4C) connector like the telephone wire connector. Or a 2.5mm round pin connector. Computers have different type of audio jacks. A converter can’t cover all of them.

Thinking About Getting a Cisco Headset?

Cisco headset

It is no secret that the most essential piece of equipment you will find in any call center is the phone headset. A good phone headset allows your employees to conduct business at a much quicker pace while simultaneously providing a more comfortable work environment. In the world of call center phones and headsets, there is one name that continues to stay at the top. Over the last several years, Cisco has proven to be an industry leader for both call center phones and headsets. However, there is a lot that goes into determining the best Cisco headset for your wants and needs. In this article, we will go over everything you need to consider before purchasing a Cisco headset.

Compatibility with a Cisco Headset

The biggest thing you will need to consider before purchasing a Cisco headset is which headset will be compatible with the phones you have. For the most part, a call center phone will long outlive a call center headset. With this in mind, it only makes sense that you will need to find a couple of headset options that will work with your phone. Here are a couple of compatibility issues and how the Cisco headset is rising above them.

Connections

A common issue that has plagued the world of call center phones and headsets is how the headset connects to the phone. For years specific phone models were notorious for only working with a select number of headset models. While this problem is far from being solved, Cisco is making leaps and bounds when it comes to making more headsets compatible with more phones.

For example, the Cisco headsets sold here at OvisLink work with dozens of different Cisco phone models. All the headsets come with a convenient quick-disconnect cord. The headsets can be plugged directly to the phone using the Cisco IP headset jack. The quick-disconnect cord can avoid any tangling from the constant movement of the headset.

Amplifiers

For a lot of headsets to work at their best – or in some cases, to work at all – they must first have an amplifier. An amplifier’s purpose is to help boost the audio quality of a headset. In addition, it can also help overcome some compatibility issues. However, with the Cisco call center headsets you will find at OvisLink, there is no need for any amplifier. As we stated above, all our Cisco headsets connect to the Cisco phone through an IP headphone jack. Also, the audio quality of the Cisco headset is already pristine, so you will not need an amplifier to improve your sound quality.

The Features That Set Cisco Apart

When it comes to purchasing headsets for your call center employees, it is important to get the best features. Indeed, the better the call center headset you provide to your employees, the more work they will be able to accomplish. A lot of the features Cisco headsets bring to the table revolve around comfort and performance. Here are just a few of the industry-leading features of a Cisco call center headset.

Cushioned Earpieces

If you have ever worked for a call center, you know firsthand how uncomfortable headsets can get. In fact, when you are wearing the same headset for eight hours a day, you can quickly get tired of that headset. That is why here at OvisLink, we provide the very best in comfort. All our Cisco call center headsets come with cushioned earpieces. Whether you get a single-ear or dual-ear headset, you will experience the comfort a cushioned earpiece has to offer. A cushioned earpiece wraps itself around you, creating a lightweight and soft sensation for your ears.

Lightweight Frame

One common problem with a lot of headsets is how heavy they are. Weight may not seem like a significant issue, but over time it can cause a lot of discomfort for those that have to wear them. All our Cisco headsets have a lightweight frame. This lightweight frame sits comfortably on your head and prevents the build-up of pressure that is common with more cumbersome headsets.

Quick-Release Cords

The cords that come with a call center headset are by far the most underrated feature. For a lot of people, they forget about the cord until they need to unplug their headset. However, cords come with a lot of features designed to make your life more convenient. For example, when you purchase a Cisco headset, you have the option to make the cord a quick-release cord. A quick-release cord makes it so much simpler to plug in and take out from the call center phone.
